Alan Greenspan – The Age of Turbulence

February 21st, 2008 · No Comments · Books

This book was somewhat biographical and a history lesson on the Fed while he was Chairman, told by Greenspan through personal reflection. It will take you through the years Greenspan held the position as Fed Chairman both on a national level and an International level. The man has had quite the career in a time when a lot of exciting world events unfolded that had economic impacts to specific areas (the falling of the Berlin Wall) and globally, and some surprisingly that had no impact (9/11).

I will tell you this 544 page book is an investment in time and I will admit was difficult to get through at times. Sometimes I thought he did a little too much name dropping when he was talking about his personal life in NY, and I didn’t think it was necessary for him to state what type of transportation he was provided, like that was bragging too.

I think his career was jealous worthy, but I know he had to put in his time for all those perks and the level of responsibility riding on the man’s back was astronomical, not sure how he slept at night. On the other side though, the book seemed self-serving and I guess you could say a lot of his career was self-serving and the power went to his head. Maybe he wrote the book to remove himself from the economic disaster we are in now that undoubtedly was born when he was Chairman.

Overall, I can’t say I would recommend this book outside of the inside information he provides about the interactions with the presidents and their personalities. There were a few times I felt like bailing out.
