We’re back

July 29th, 2008 · No Comments · Family, Travel

Well we’ve been back since Friday, and I must say that going there was a much easier adjustment than coming back. There is a 6-hour time difference between here and there and jumping forward or losing 6 hours is tough.

The flight home was uneventful, it was the same flight path going home as it was coming, but we got off in Maui before the plane headed to Kona on the way there, on the way back we had to make a short stop in Kona, but had to get off the plane. Not sure why anybody goes to Kona, didn’t seem like there was anything there, coffee is good though.

As usual I ended up with an infant sitting next to me, though I think the grandmother was worse than the baby. We arrived in Chicago about 5:30AM central with a two hour layover before getting home about 10:00AM or so. I think I slept in until noon on Saturday and about 12:30PM on Sunday, so getting back to work hasn’t been easy. I did well yesterday, but I really didn’t want to get out of bed this morning. I really don’t mind going into work (at least this job), but I really don’t like to get up in the morning. On top of that husband decides he is going to run in the morning. I can’t say he went yesterday, but he did make it today and he was all chipper. I did benefit with a breakfast sandwich and coffee though, so I won’t complain.

It was a great trip even with daughter not being able to dive. She did go to our doctor yesterday and he took her off the pill form medication and kept her on the one spray and gave her another spray. I guess if it doesn’t clear up she will have to have tubes put in.

My skin loved the weather and I bet I wouldn’t need to put on lotion, but out of habit I did anyway. I should have experimented to see if I could go without. Either way I guess you never want to be in the sun without sunscreen, high filtering and reapply frequently, the sun is very intense and it doesn’t take much time at all to get burned. The pineapple is awesome and if you’ve never had a Maui Gold pineapple you should try one. You can order them online here.

Gas prices didn’t fluctuate like they do here. It was about $4.69 a gallon when we arrived and all gas stations had about the same price and varied little if at all. By the time we left it was about $4.64. Bread and milk was very expensive, actually I think I was most surprised by the cost of bread. As you may have figured everything is imported so we did run into some restaurants that were out of certain items, small price to pay.

I do love it there and think I could live there, but there is one aspect of it I’m not sure I could tolerate - the teenagers and low lifes. When we dropped off the scuba tanks I came out of the dive shop to get the rest of the weights and I caught three boys walking up to the Jeep with one taking a look inside. Speaking of the Jeep, I did not want to get one again especially with there being three of us. The whole Jeep idea was bad form the beginning and only got worse as the vacation progressed. By the end of the trip husband agreed. With the easy access (even daughter and I broke into it while we were there without doing any damage), pain in the ass to get in and out of and to load, the amount of gas and the comfort level it just wasn’t worth it. We caught a group of other boys shoplifting from another store. One thing we didn’t have on this trip was guys asking us if we wanted to buy weed, that seemed to be big last time we were there. I think with the economy as bad as it is and the high cost of living the thievery is only going to get worse.

We did find out the reason why the road to Hana was closed on that side of the island. Apparently there was an earthquake and the road has been closed for the past 6 months.
