We normally take a 2:00 break every afternoon for a drink and just to get away from our desk for a moment. The crew has been light lately with just a couple of us going recently, today however nine of us went.
The break includes going to the in-house convenience store, up the elevators to the upper floor break room for some ice. The combined weight of the nine of us is at least 2000 lbs. I figured this out because I almost had a heart-attack when the nine of us were packed in the elevator like sardines.
We were packed in and some lady comes walking up at the last second while the elevator doors were closing and one of the guys gets his hand caught in the elevator trying to stop it so the lady could get on. I was nervous enough because I thought we were already over the weight limit and then dumb ass almost breaks his hand to let somebody else on. I don’t know who was more stupid, him or her for getting on an already packed elevator.
The elevators here are fast too, so she wouldn’t have had to wait long for the next one. I think this may be the first time I have ever seen anybody get on an elevator that was that packed, except for maybe in NYC at a sporting event, but then it is different. I know I wouldn’t get on a packed elevator. If we would have gotten stuck it would have gotten bad real fast. Anyway, I had to find out what the wait limit actually is just out of curiosity. I thought it was like 1000 lbs, but when I looked it is 2500 lbs, so we were at it or pretty damn close.
I wonder if they have had to increase the weight limit of elevators over the years. I wonder if the weight limits are different in America than they are in Europe. I did a brief search and couldn’t find anything.
