I had somewhat of an argument tonight with a friend of mine regarding racism and the glass ceiling. It started by watching the Nightly News. He is tired of hearing about Obama (even though he voted for him) and the first puppy.
Well I am not tired of hearing about it and I realize the reason why the first puppy has made such news is the fact that so many people love their pets and of course Obama is going to make the news because we’ve been going through the same bullshit with Bush for the past 8 years and the contrast between Bush coming in office and Obama coming in office is vastly different and for that reason alone is newsworthy and Obama just fucking rocks.
My friend feels that people are making too big a deal about Obama like he is the second coming of Christ, I believe that if Obama makes people feel good about their future that any relief from all of the negative vibes should be appreciated, and welcomed, after all nothing good comes from constantly thinking negatively.
After watching the depressing unemployment news on the Nightly News made me rethink how fortunate we are and my optimism for the future. It made me think back to 2001 when the rug was ripped out from under the IT industry. I was in a bad position back then employment wise and gives me the ability to empathize with the unemployed right now.
This led me to a conversation with my friend. Well, one thing led to another and the last comment I made was, “OK, racism doesn’t exist and neither does the glass ceiling.” Funny, because daughter wanted to see the MOM jeans SNL skit which led to us finding the Oprah skit (above) which turned out o be the exact topic of what I was arguing with friend about…go figure (the skit included who had it harder white women or black men).
For all of you other white men out there in case you were wondering, although I think you are about as empathetic as my friend, racism and the glass ceiling do exist, so every time you think a women is too aggressive or a black man is over compensating think about slavery and how a woman is considered second class in many cultures, but of course what the fuck do you know you don’t have any idea what it is like.
So in case you were wondering there is no racism nor a glass ceiling for white men in America.
