You may remember in a previous post that I mentioned I ran about a mile and a half and that was a lot because I hated running, wasn’t good at it and it was the farthest I ever ran in my life? Well, I have continued to run, and I am actually surprised that I was even able to run a mile, but yesterday I ran a little over 4.5 miles. This was a gradual build up and I have run 3 miles a few times and I attribute this new found motivation to Nike+, I just hope it sticks.
I have been thin my whole life and I am not sure what happened (probably age, laziness, eating like crap), but I got fat. People still say I am skinny and think I am crazy, but they don’t know what they are talking about, so I am hoping running will be the thing that gets me more toned. It’s not my weight, but the condition the weight is in.
The Nike+ thing is fun, and it is motivating. It does require an iPod Nano (which I already had) and a sensor thinga-ma-jiggy. It does not require the Nike shoes (you can buy a little shoe thingy) and I would NOT recommend the sports-band. Husband went through two Nanos and four sports-bands and it still didn’t work. If I am still with it during Christmas time I may ask for a Garmin Forerunner 405.
Your iTunes will have a Nike+ tab and will keep track of all of your runs - distance, calories and time. You can join challenges, trash talk, and do the training. It is basically a running community and it is nice to know there are people who are worse runners than me. My excuse in the past was that running will kill you because I always think of that Jim Fixx guy who dropped dead from running. Granted I was very young, but for some reason I remember it. At least I think it was Jim Fixx, let me Google it real quick….yeah, it’s Jim Fixx.
I have one really good suggestion for women too - wear a friggin’ running bra. The last thing I want to see is a twenty-something running down the trail with her “pancakes” flopping up and down on her chest. I have learned that men’s nipples can bleed, I had no idea. My Husband runs, or I should say has started running again, and it hasn’t happened to him (yet) and I have never heard him mention it. He does wear Under Armor under his running shorts though, apparently guys chafe.
The picture above shows the armband (this is for the older Nano and was very difficult to find), the little shoe pocket, the sensor, and the Nike+ thinga-ma-bobber. So far it has worked well for me, just remember when you calibrate to go by a known distance, not by what the Nano is displaying, and set your weight or it will not keep track of calories burned.
